Mr. Martin Project Evaluation
1.) Project goals:
Understand how the game of golf was played when it began.- This goal was met once I completed the research phase of my project because I learned a great deal about how the sport is now different from when it began, and presented it to my audience.
Present project in an interesting and interactive manner. – I did well in keeping people interested by have visuals when I spoke, and overall speaking loudly, clearly, and good body language. However my presentation was not interactive because there was simply no way for the audience to interact with the topic I chose.
Be able to compare different golf technologies hands on, probably clubs. - I did that by having my expert use old clubs compared to new clubs and then I made a video on him doing it. The results were great and proved my thesis.
Get people to appreciate golf as a sport. - I think I achieved this because peoples’ faces in the audience looked genuinely interested on what I was presenting and my classmates told me that my topic was interesting and original. Also I got a lot of questions from the audience about golf which showed a genuine interest and curiosity for the sport.
Use my expert effectively in my final project. - I used my expert very well. I used him not only in my hands on demonstration video, but he helped me get some great research as well.
2.) What did you seek for advice on this project? Did you improve at asking for feedback? Advice I sought on this project began from the very beginning. I knew I wanted to do golf, but was not sure how I could form it into an interesting topic. I asked my expert what he thought and he gave me the great idea to talk about golf technologies. Other advice I got was from Mrs. Valenza regarding resources, and Mr. Martin on what looked good on my slideshow and what didn’t look good.
3.) Describe any risks you took in order to complete this project. Risks I took in this project would mainly be the judgments I thought I would get from my classmates for doing a project on golf. Many of my peers see golf as an uncool sport or a boring project to watch. I saw this risk and wanted to make sure I made my project interesting to both my proctors and my classmates because they were the ones grading me. Thankfully I was able to do my topic of golf and make it interesting to everyone.
4.) List 3 personal satisfactions you have gained from this project.
One personal satisfaction would be the fact I got to do something I enjoy for senior seminar. I got to do a project on my favorite sport and I to real interest in my work and didn’t hate what I was doing. Not only did I do something I liked, but I got an A on it too. The next personal satisfaction I got was the fact I used my expert in my project really well and most kids just had a random person who they never really used. My expert and I even grew closer as the project went on. Lastly I was very proud that I only used about five filler words when earlier in the year I had used more than fifteen. This was a great accomplishment for me and I was happy to see how much I improved when it comes to public speaking.
5.) Describe 2 problems you encountered and how you solved them. The first problem I encountered was how to make a hands on project. With the help of a fellow student we came up with the idea of making a video of my expert hitting two different golf technologies and measuring the difference. It made for a great project and overall great presentation. The next problem I encountered was getting my video on my presentation. I was unable to email it or save it on a flash drive do to format issues. Thankfully I once again asked the help of a classmate who showed me how to post it on you tube, from there I was able to link it on my power point and present it to the class.
6.) What did you learn about managing your time?
I learned that time management alone can make a project really good. This project made me manage my time and I almost never procrastinated and got everything done on time. Other projects in high school I always procrastinated and god mediocre grades. This project made me see that I have much more potential to do well as long as I stay organized and manage my time.
7.) What did you learn about managing your level of stress?
I learned that it is pretty hard to control stress, but that if prepare hard, your presentation is much less stressful because you know what you’re doing. Also I learned that having a backup plan always helps in managing stress. For example, in case my video did not embed correctly to my power point I had the YouTube link ready for back up, which I ended up using. Also time management helps stress a lot. Less procrastination means less stress.
8.) If you could do the same project over again, what would you do differently?
I would try and speak and add more color and fun to my video, and I would also examine other golf technologies, not just the golf club, on my hands on presentation.
9.) Grade yourself based on the goals of the course.
I think I deserve an A because I was creative in my topic because I incorporated something I enjoyed into a realistic provable thesis. I also put on a great presentation and kept good eye contact and spoke well, along with meeting time requirements. I analyzed information and applied my knowledge very well and felt that I was one of the few students who truly proved their thesis and I also used many interesting statistics and information to back up my thesis. Overall I felt I met all the requirements and worked hard.
